Needs From: Loudoun Cares

Do you enjoy doing projects around the house? We are looking for handymen to volunteer for various projects around the Oatlands property.  We have 400 acres of land and many buildings to maintain. You do not have to know all the following skills to volunteer. Some of the projects we are looking to accomplish are:

Docents provide visitors with a clear, accurate and interactive tour about the full history of Oatlands, including the Carter and Eustis families, slavery, and specific people who were once enslaved by the Carters.  Docents must possess excellent speaking skills; be comfortable interacting with the public; have a basic knowledge of Virginia and Loudoun County history; and have a desire to learn an extensive amount of history about the Carters and slavery.  Training is provided. Docents must be able to work weekends, some holidays, and an occasional evening for special events.

We are looking for people interested in assisting the Carriage House Visitor Center at Oatlands. This volunteer position would help front desk staff with greeting visitors as they arrive to Oatlands. These tasks would include:
-Upon their arrival, greet guests at the front door with a smile and ask what brings them to Oatlands. 
-During busy weekends, this volunteer will be stationed near the kiosk to greet visitors as they arrive and guide them to the Carriage House Visitor Center. 
-This position may help with ticket sales at the front desk and orient guests on how to get to the mansion or garden. 
-We are looking for volunteers who are able to dedicate at least 8 hours a month to this position.

Do you enjoy working outside and caring for plants? Green thumb volunteers are always needed to help tend to the nearly five acres of historic gardens. Tasks might include: weeding, mulching, pruning, digging, watering, leaf clean-up, stick clean-up, planting, taking care of potted plants, maintaining trails, etc. Volunteers may be asked by visitors, basic questions about the site or the garden while volunteering; a training manual with helpful information will be provided. We are looking for volunteers who are able to dedicate at least 8 hours a month to help us preserve the gardens at Oatlands.
