Volunteer: Community Coordinator (Numerous)

Pumpkins For Pigs Foundation (PFPF) is a 501.3c focused on reducing food waste in local communities across the US.

PFPF started in 2017 with 10 donation sites in Loudoun County with the aim of reducing food waste one pumpkin at a time. Through conversations with donation sites,  donors and others, it was clear there was a need and a desire for these services.  With each passing year, the list of accepted items expanded.  Today, we serve over 500 communities in over 40 states -- 150+ here in Virginia alone.  With a conservative estimate of over 700 tons diverted in 2022, we are just getting started and see enormous opportunity to further our impact.

Role: Coordinate the collection of donated pumpkins, gourds, hay bales, and other items for your neighborhood, school, office, place of worship, etc.

Dates: Oct - Nov 19, 2023 (approx)

Location: Your Community (neighborhood, school, office, place of worship, etc.) - anywhere

Activities

Set the Stage: Work with the BoD (Board of Directors) POC (Point of Contact) to set the following:  Drop off spot (where can community members place their donated items) Drop off dates (how many days will community members have to drop off their donations to that spot?) Transportation of donated items (who has a vehicle/capability to transport the donations - or will the donation site pick up) Donation recipient (which farm / animal sanctuary will receive your donations) Delivery Date (what day are you targeting for the donations to be dropped off to the donation site or picked up by the donation site) What help do you need?  Be Creative: Work with board member(s) to create a flyer (or similar) to use in physical and/or electronic outlets to invite neighbors, schoolmates, officemates, etc. to bring their left over pumpkins, gourds and other items during the agreed upon timeframe (i.e. drop off your pumpkins, hale bales at the corn of Main & Misty Terrace between Nov 1 and Nov 4 and we will donate them to ABC Farm in Hillsboro on Sunday Nov 5. Contact Fred for more details!).   Get the Word Out: Remind your community leading up to the drop off dates. Show Impact: Take photos and share with your neighborhood/school/office the growing donations and final total of each item type (i.e. 8 gourds, 1 hale bale, 39 pumpkins). Take photos at donation site if feasible.

Total Est Time: 10 hours  (depends on duration of collection period and if its an adult or student driving the effort)

Volunteer: Start a PASTA Chapter today!

You have the opportunity to join a group of dedicated students as we tackle issues facing our community!

PASTA operates in chapters of 4-6 students who work together to meet our mission: kids helping kids in our community.  We do this through project-based volunteering where you use your interest/passions to help other kids in Loudoun County. Projects have ranged from providing STEM classes at afterschool programs, giving guitar lessons, putting together passion kits that explore their love of watercolor, teaching kids about managing emotions, planning Secret Santa events...and so much more.

As a PASTA member, you'll have the opportunity to participate in leadership positions, develop skills related to project management and budgeting, and use empathy to help your community. All new chapters receive guidance from a mentor and PASTA's Board of Directors.

PASTA members typically report spending 3-6 hours per month planning their PASTA projects, and 8-12 hours per year executing their innovative projects.

Eligibility: All kids in 6th - 10th grade are eligible to start a chapter. We accept chapters from anywhere around the world, but our hub is Loudoun County, Virginia.

Step 1: Form your group of 4-6 students. We recommend you work with your friends and that all of you come from the same area.

Step 2: Email pastateens@gmail.com to start the enrollment process!

We look forward to working with you! Enrollment closes in September.

In 2020, we made 560 quilts that were donated to various organizations in Loudoun County. We need volunteers to make quilt tops (cut, assemble, etc.) as well as perform other steps in the quilting process.  We will teach you every step of making a quilt.  Anyone can learn!

We also need support with providing materials to accomplish our mission.  Our largest expenses are batting, backing fabric and quilting thread.  Donations to support operating costs for our studio are also welcome.

Here is an Amazon link to the batting that we order to make quilts:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003W0WS0K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

An easier way is to make a direct donation at our Facebook page at  https://www.Facebook.com/StationStitchers/ where we will purchase quilt supplies from the funds we receive through donations.  Thank you for any and all support that you give us.

Volunteer: COVID-19 Request for PPE Donations

HealthWorks is looking for donations of PPE (personal protective equipment) for our front-line health care professionals who are caring for our communities during the Covid-19 crisis.  We need surgical or N95 masks (any size), face shields/goggles, gowns, disposable  gloves, hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes. We will gladly arrange to pick up donated items. Any amount – one box of gloves, a few masks – all makes a difference in our ability to test and care for our patients. In-kind donations can be arranged by contacting Lisa Knapp at (703) 840-4688, lknapp@hwnova.org Financial donations can be made through our website at www.hwnova.org

What We Do:

The Ampersand Pantry Project was created to help our community during these very difficult times. Our drive-through location started serving meals on April 16, 2020. The first day, we gave out 25 meals in 180 minutes. More recently, we have given out 340 meals in only 75 minutes. To date, we have given out over 48,000 meals. Each meal contains 1 entree that is provided to us by local restaurants, 1 beverage, 1 piece of fruit, 1 bag of chips or a granola bar, and sometimes a dessert. We have not only made it a goal to support the people in our community, we have made it a goal to support our local restaurant owners. Each day different restaurants are providing the food, some donating and some working at cost, all to serve up to 350 meals a day. We also take about 130 of these meals to our pantries on Edwards Ferry Road and Harrison Street. By 11:30am, we have a line of families, who do not have access to cars, waiting for us to get there with the meals, non-perishable foods, and diapers.

In addition, we give out diapers and baby wipes. In a single day, we give out more than 800 diapers (sizes 1-6) and many baby wipes to families in need. To date, we have given out over 200,000 diapers. We rely on diaper and baby wipe donations, as well as monetary donations, to continue to provide this important service.

Every Saturday, we provide pet food to our recipients as well. In these difficult times, many people have had to surrender their pets to shelters because they cannot afford to take care of them. We have partnered with Gray Face Acres Senior Dog Shelter and Retreat to ensure that families can keep their pets fed. We always encourage and welcome pet food donations to keep this program running.

Aside from providing people with basic needs, we realize that it is just as important to lift their spirits. Everyday, we give out a Carnation to every driver, walker and biker that comes to our drive-through. We attach different quotes in English and Spanish to each Carnation to make our recipients smile, as well as to remind them that we will get through these hard times together. One of the quotes this week was "We rise by lifting others"  or "Nos levantamos al levantar a otros." By the end of every week, our recipients have gathered enough flowers to have a nice bouquet to come home to.

On average, 1 day of operation costs $1,500.00. Please consider donating to The Ampersand Pantry Project so that we can keep this project alive to support the families, individuals, restaurant owners and pets that need our help now more than ever before.

Monetary Donation Instructions:

Supporters may make donations payable to The Ampersand Pantry Project, a 501c3 charitable organization. The organization will acknowledge, in writing, all donations for the donor's tax purposes, if the donor's address is provided. Checks should be mailed to The Ampersand Pantry Project, 105 Loudoun St., SE, Leesburg, Virginia 20175. Checks can also be dropped off at our drive-through site, 338 East Market St. Leesburg, VA 20176, Monday - Sunday from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Volunteer: BATTLE BUDDY- VETERANS

Are you a veteran or active duty service member?  We are in need of those who have served or are currently serving in our Great Military.  Military Volunteers are needed to become a "battle" to a veteran in hospice care.  Our veterans proudly and courageously served and now it's our turn to serve them.

Battle Buddies are "friends" and call our veterans each week for a friendly visit.  Veterans often will confide in another veteran before talking to a civilian. You speak the same language and "get it"  This is a very meaningful way of supporting veterans.  You will hear their stories which are remarkable.  You will be their "battle"

We also perform veterans ceremonies which are an outstanding way of celebrating the service of our veterans. It is wonderful.

Due to COVID restrictions Battle Buddies are not seeing Veterans in person but they can visit via zoom, phone and do ceremonies via zoom.

Please contact Katherine Knoble, Veterans Service Coordinator at kknobel@capitalcaring.org for more information.

Our neurodiverse team of staff, mentors, and apprentices grow and deliver herbs, flowers, and vegetables to area businesses and food pantries. Select businesses even partner with us to employ our apprentices. This specific job will be working with an apprentice outside the garden on-site to develop work training skills and job experience.

Do you have a background in special education, social work/mental health, therapeutic work, or gardening with a desire to support neurodiverse individuals? Have you ever worked in a commercial kitchen? Are you available to work 3-hours per week, coaching one to two neurodiverse apprentices seeking to develop their job skills, self-awareness, and ability to self-advocate in future employment positions?

This is an opportunity to give back to your community, while increasing your own skills in working with neurodiverse individuals. You do need patience, calm communications skills, and understanding of the executive function, self-regulation, and self-awareness challenges and gifts associated with neurodiversity.

We prioritize a relationally based work environment where reciprocal communication is key to learning and self-development. We welcome challenges and set-backs as learning opportunities. And we believe that a balanced, well-regulated nervous system is the first step in increasing executive function, organizational, and emotional regulation on the job.

We hire mentors for 8-week job contracts, structured around a clearly designed 7-step framework. Provide job coaching for neurodiverse individuals to introduce work skills, personal awareness, and address specific challenges each individual has experience in getting and keeping a job.

Sample duties include:

Attend review meetings with Legacy Farms leadership to receive apprentice assignments, develop plan(s) of

action, and discuss philosophical principles related to mentoring

Identify each assigned apprentice(s)’ “edge of independence” to refine goals and deliverables

Create supports, materials, communications, guided instructions and networked relationships that move

apprentice(s) along a continuum of progress and independence in job skills

Attend work with the apprentice for two hours per work day; up to 2x/week. Coaching and working alongside the apprentices to complete assigned work tasks

Dedicate an additional hour per week to prepare for consults with assigned apprentice(s) on areas of challenge

and strategies for success in relation to agreed-upon responsibilities (by phone, email, or in person during garden hours)

Keep basic notes about each apprentices’ progress and complete quantitative and qualitative review of apprentices’ performance at the end of the 8-week period.

Hours: 2x per week (TBD) 5:30pm-7:30pm (on site); one hour per week on your own schedule to prepare/coach off-site. Location: An assigned commercial kitchen in Ashburn.

Volunteer: Event On-Site Volunteers

Throughout the year, Friends of Loudoun Mental Health participates in various activities throughout the county that require the set up and staffing of an information table, handing out information to the public on our core programs.  We also promote our activities such as baseball ticket raffle sales, hockey ticket raffle ticket sales, our Walk with Hope, and events for Friends Being Friends events such as bowling and parties.  Since we are a small working/governing board, it is sometimes hard to staff the tables.

We also are working on our annual fundraising concert and are looking for volunteers to help in the planning and implementation of the concert plans.  This would involve periodic committee meetings.

If you are interested in serving occasionally on behalf of or with those dealing with a mental illness, please signup and let us know your specific interest.

Our upcoming events are posted in the Events Section.  Please review and then come back to this page to sign up to help.  We truly appreciate your interest.

Volunteer: Help Us Make a Difference

Friends of Loudoun Mental Health (FLMH) has been active in Loudoun County for over 60 years, serving those with mental illness with financial housing assistance and through advocacy for increased and accessible services, and by increasing awareness of the need for good mental health and the acceptance of the people among us who constantly deal with a mental illness. We are involved in an effort to prevent suicide, especially among teens, and in supporting those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

We are extremely active as we are both a governing and working board.  We are seeking members who have an interest in working to provide financial assistance to Loudoun County residents experiencing disabling mental illnesses, who are willing to speak out as activists to help end discrimination, and who want to support and promote educational programs to make the community aware of mental health issues.

If you are someone who wants to make a difference for people with serious mental illness, or you know someone, please reach out to me.  This organization is on the verge of doing even more exciting things to provide a better life for the mentally ill and for doing our part to erase the stigma associated with mental illness so others may be willing to seek treatment and get their lives back on track. We are especially interested in new members who have an interest in legislative activities in all levels of government to keep the Board informed of proposed bills associated with services and delivery of those services for individuals and families dealing with mental illness.

We also would welcome individuals who have an interest in working with our investments, fundraising, project management and outreach.

More than mere talk, Friends of Loudoun Mental Health provides direct assistance to Loudoun County residents disabled by mental illness.  We invite you to read more about the work we do and encourage you to partner with us on our mission to better the lives of our neighbors suffering with this debilitating disease at www.loudounfriends.org.

If all of this interests you, please reach out to us.

Volunteer: Leap of Kindness - Pet Food Drive

Hold a Pet Food Drive for the Loudoun Pet Pantry.  This year round program needs adult dog and cat food; small bags 3 to 8 lbs and canned food of any size. The food is distributed to Loudoun families in need.

Pet food drives can be done anywhere (neighborhood, school, church, etc) by individuals or groups (friends/neighbors, sports groups, scout troops, etc).  If you need help with ideas contact us at petpantry@humaneloudoun.org. Once you have collected the pet food, notify us and we will pick it up.

All it takes for a family pet to be hungry or surrendered to a shelter/ rescue is for their family to have an unexpected medical bill or a job loss. This is an all too common story. Many families that were once financially secure now choose between buying food for their children or paying the rent and feeding the family pet. Your support enables us to be committed to assuring family pets are provided food and help the family keep their beloved furry family members.
