Volunteer: Field Trip Volunteer OrientationThis orientation is specific to those volunteers who want to volunteer at the Lab during Field Trips during the week (Monday-Friday) and want to work directly with children and staff, creating great experiences for them. If this describes you, there are a few requirements you must meet: - You must be at least 18 years old. Field trip volunteer orientation is designed to equip volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to support students during their visit. The orientation consists of two main parts: Presentation in the Garage: Volunteers will start by gathering in the garage for a presentation. During this session, they will learn about the organization's mission, history, and overall goals. This portion aims to provide a solid understanding of the organization's background and the context in which they will be working. Field Trip Experience: The second part of the orientation involves an actual field trip experience. Volunteers will be assigned to groups of students and will rotate through various experience areas within the lab. This hands-on session helps volunteers become familiar with the different stations and activities that students will engage in, ensuring they are well-prepared to guide and assist throughout the field trip. Overall, the orientation is designed to blend informative learning with practical experience, ensuring that volunteers are both knowledgeable and comfortable in their roles. Field Trips are in the mornings Monday-Friday at the Children's Science Center Lab during the school year, except for some school holidays. The volunteer shift is 2.5 hours, either from 9:30am-12:00pm, or 10:00am-12:30pm. Field Trips are for Elementary Schools. If you are not willing or able to meet these requirements, we would still love to have you volunteer in other roles at the Science Center. You can assist in behind-the-scenes preparation and stocking, community events like Family Science Nights, and some special events. If you wish to volunteer in these support roles and not as a field trip volunteer, you do not need to attend an in-person orientation. Instead, you can sign up immediately for any opportunity on the volunteer portal, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements as listed in the opportunity description. If you are willing and able to meet the Field Trip Volunteering requirements and are interested in participating in an orientation, please first review the changes to our volunteer policies here. We will be holding orientation 1 time monthly, and upcoming orientation dates will be posted here as they are scheduled. Feel free, also, to email the volunteer team at volunteer@childsci.org with questions and for more information. Volunteer: Community Coordinator (Numerous)Pumpkins For Pigs Foundation (PFPF) is a 501.3c focused on reducing food waste in local communities across the US. PFPF started in 2017 with 10 donation sites in Loudoun County with the aim of reducing food waste one pumpkin at a time. Through conversations with donation sites, donors and others, it was clear there was a need and a desire for these services. With each passing year, the list of accepted items expanded. Today, we serve over 500 communities in over 40 states -- 150+ here in Virginia alone. With a conservative estimate of over 700 tons diverted in 2022, we are just getting started and see enormous opportunity to further our impact. Role: Coordinate the collection of donated pumpkins, gourds, hay bales, and other items for your neighborhood, school, office, place of worship, etc. Dates: Oct - Nov 19, 2023 (approx) Location: Your Community (neighborhood, school, office, place of worship, etc.) - anywhere Activities Set the Stage: Work with the BoD (Board of Directors) POC (Point of Contact) to set the following: Drop off spot (where can community members place their donated items) Drop off dates (how many days will community members have to drop off their donations to that spot?) Transportation of donated items (who has a vehicle/capability to transport the donations - or will the donation site pick up) Donation recipient (which farm / animal sanctuary will receive your donations) Delivery Date (what day are you targeting for the donations to be dropped off to the donation site or picked up by the donation site) What help do you need? Be Creative: Work with board member(s) to create a flyer (or similar) to use in physical and/or electronic outlets to invite neighbors, schoolmates, officemates, etc. to bring their left over pumpkins, gourds and other items during the agreed upon timeframe (i.e. drop off your pumpkins, hale bales at the corn of Main & Misty Terrace between Nov 1 and Nov 4 and we will donate them to ABC Farm in Hillsboro on Sunday Nov 5. Contact Fred for more details!). Get the Word Out: Remind your community leading up to the drop off dates. Show Impact: Take photos and share with your neighborhood/school/office the growing donations and final total of each item type (i.e. 8 gourds, 1 hale bale, 39 pumpkins). Take photos at donation site if feasible.
Total Est Time: 10 hours (depends on duration of collection period and if its an adult or student driving the effort)
