Volunteer: COVID-19 Request for PPE Donations

HealthWorks is looking for donations of PPE (personal protective equipment) for our front-line health care professionals who are caring for our communities during the Covid-19 crisis.  We need surgical or N95 masks (any size), face shields/goggles, gowns, disposable  gloves, hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes. We will gladly arrange to pick up donated items. Any amount – one box of gloves, a few masks – all makes a difference in our ability to test and care for our patients. Financial contributions are also always welcome, most especially, during this ongoing, constantly changing situation. Financial support is more valuable than ever, as it provides HealthWorks with the financial flexibility necessary to provide the highest quality of care to some of our community’s most vulnerable men, women and children. Our staff and our patients would be so appreciative of any support.
In-kind donations can be arranged by contacting Lisa Knapp at (703) 840-4688, lknapp@hwnova.org Financial donations can be made through our website at www.hwnova.org

What We Do:

The Ampersand Pantry Project was created to help our community during these very difficult times. Our drive-through location started serving meals on April 16, 2020. The first day, we gave out 25 meals in 180 minutes. More recently, we have given out 340 meals in only 75 minutes. To date, we have given out over 48,000 meals. Each meal contains 1 entree that is provided to us by local restaurants, 1 beverage, 1 piece of fruit, 1 bag of chips or a granola bar, and sometimes a dessert. We have not only made it a goal to support the people in our community, we have made it a goal to support our local restaurant owners. Each day different restaurants are providing the food, some donating and some working at cost, all to serve up to 350 meals a day. We also take about 130 of these meals to our pantries on Edwards Ferry Road and Harrison Street. By 11:30am, we have a line of families, who do not have access to cars, waiting for us to get there with the meals, non-perishable foods, and diapers.

In addition, we give out diapers and baby wipes. In a single day, we give out more than 800 diapers (sizes 1-6) and many baby wipes to families in need. To date, we have given out over 200,000 diapers. We rely on diaper and baby wipe donations, as well as monetary donations, to continue to provide this important service.

Every Saturday, we provide pet food to our recipients as well. In these difficult times, many people have had to surrender their pets to shelters because they cannot afford to take care of them. We have partnered with Gray Face Acres Senior Dog Shelter and Retreat to ensure that families can keep their pets fed. We always encourage and welcome pet food donations to keep this program running.

Aside from providing people with basic needs, we realize that it is just as important to lift their spirits. Everyday, we give out a Carnation to every driver, walker and biker that comes to our drive-through. We attach different quotes in English and Spanish to each Carnation to make our recipients smile, as well as to remind them that we will get through these hard times together. One of the quotes this week was "We rise by lifting others"  or "Nos levantamos al levantar a otros." By the end of every week, our recipients have gathered enough flowers to have a nice bouquet to come home to.

On average, 1 day of operation costs $1,500.00. Please consider donating to The Ampersand Pantry Project so that we can keep this project alive to support the families, individuals, restaurant owners and pets that need our help now more than ever before.

Monetary Donation Instructions:

Supporters may make donations payable to The Ampersand Pantry Project, a 501c3 charitable organization. The organization will acknowledge, in writing, all donations for the donor's tax purposes, if the donor's address is provided. Checks should be mailed to The Ampersand Pantry Project, 105 Loudoun St., SE, Leesburg, Virginia 20175. Checks can also be dropped off at our drive-through site, 338 East Market St. Leesburg, VA 20176, Monday - Sunday from 10:00am - 12:00pm. In addition, The Ampersand Pantry has a GoFundMe page, which can be accessed through copying and pasting the link below into your search bar.

Volunteer: BATTLE BUDDY- VETERANS

Are you a veteran or active duty service member?  We are in need of those who have served or are currently serving in our Great Military.  Military Volunteers are needed to become a "battle" to a veteran in hospice care.  Our veterans proudly and courageously served and now it's our turn to serve them.

Battle Buddies are "friends" and call our veterans each week for a friendly visit.  Veterans often will confide in another veteran before talking to a civilian. You speak the same language and "get it"  This is a very meaningful way of supporting veterans.  You will hear their stories which are remarkable.  You will be their "battle"

We also perform veterans ceremonies which are an outstanding way of celebrating the service of our veterans. It is wonderful.

Due to COVID restrictions Battle Buddies are not seeing Veterans in person but they can visit via zoom, phone and do ceremonies via zoom.

Please contact Katherine Knoble, Veterans Service Coordinator at kknobel@capitalcaring.org for more information.

Volunteer: COVID-19- Sanitation Supplies

Due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19 and the increased demand for sanitation supplies, GSA is asking for your help in securing some of those supplies for our shelters. GSA operates 3 Family Tranisitional Shelters, 2 Communal Transitional Shelters, and an Emergency Shelter. Some of our residents are elderly, and many have underlying health issues. Many of our residents do not have their own form of transportation, which makes it particularly difficult for them to secure items from the grocery stores.

Here is a list of our most needed items:

1. Toilet Paper

2. Sanitation Wipes

3. Hand Sanitizer

4. Paper Towels

5. Surface Cleaner

Please respond to the need prior to going to any links. This way we have an idea of what needs are being addressed.

We appreciate any and all support during this confusing and unprecedented time!

Volunteer: Event On-Site Volunteers

Throughout the year, Friends of Loudoun Mental Health participates in various activities throughout the county that require the set up and staffing of an information table, handing out information to the public on our core programs.  We also promote our activities such as baseball ticket raffle sales, hockey ticket raffle ticket sales, our Walk with Hope, and events for Friends Being Friends events such as bowling and parties.  Since we are a small working/governing board, it is sometimes hard to staff the tables.

We also are working on our annual fundraising concert and are looking for volunteers to help in the planning and implementation of the concert plans.  This would involve periodic committee meetings.

If you are interested in serving occasionally on behalf of or with those dealing with a mental illness, please signup and let us know your specific interest.

Our upcoming events are posted in the Events Section.  Please review and then come back to this page to sign up to help.  We truly appreciate your interest.

Volunteer: Help Us Make a Difference

Friends of Loudoun Mental Health (FLMH) has been active in Loudoun County for over 60 years, serving those with mental illness with financial housing assistance and through advocacy for increased and accessible services, and by increasing awareness of the need for good mental health and the acceptance of the people among us who constantly deal with a mental illness. We are involved in an effort to prevent suicide, especially among teens, and in supporting those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

We are extremely active as we are both a governing and working board.  We are seeking members who have an interest in working to provide financial assistance to Loudoun County residents experiencing disabling mental illnesses, who are willing to speak out as activists to help end discrimination, and who want to support and promote educational programs to make the community aware of mental health issues.

If you are someone who wants to make a difference for people with serious mental illness, or you know someone, please reach out to me.  This organization is on the verge of doing even more exciting things to provide a better life for the mentally ill and for doing our part to erase the stigma associated with mental illness so others may be willing to seek treatment and get their lives back on track. We are especially interested in new members who have an interest in legislative activities in all levels of government to keep the Board informed of proposed bills associated with services and delivery of those services for individuals and families dealing with mental illness.

We also would welcome individuals who have an interest in working with our investments, fundraising, project management and outreach.

More than mere talk, Friends of Loudoun Mental Health provides direct assistance to Loudoun County residents disabled by mental illness.  We invite you to read more about the work we do and encourage you to partner with us on our mission to better the lives of our neighbors suffering with this debilitating disease at www.loudounfriends.org.

If all of this interests you, please reach out to us.

Volunteer: Leap of Kindness - Pet Food Drive

Hold a Pet Food Drive for the Loudoun Pet Pantry.  This year round program needs adult dog and cat food; small bags 3 to 8 lbs and canned food of any size. The food is distributed to Loudoun families in need.

Pet food drives can be done anywhere (neighborhood, school, church, etc) by individuals or groups (friends/neighbors, sports groups, scout troops, etc).  If you need help with ideas contact us at petpantry@humaneloudoun.org. Once you have collected the pet food, notify us and we will pick it up.

All it takes for a family pet to be hungry or surrendered to a shelter/ rescue is for their family to have an unexpected medical bill or a job loss. This is an all too common story. Many families that were once financially secure now choose between buying food for their children or paying the rent and feeding the family pet. Your support enables us to be committed to assuring family pets are provided food and help the family keep their beloved furry family members.

The first steps toward becoming a SCAN volunteer are to visit the SCAN VOLUNTEER age and fill out the Volunteer Interest Form. Public Education Program

Fact Sheets: We’re constantly adding to our collection of fact sheets and would love help researching and writing more. Or if fact sheets aren’t your thing, but you enjoy writing, then try your hand at a blog post. This is a great remote volunteer opportunity!

Translations: Another fantastic remote opportunity! All of our fact sheets are published in English and Spanish, and we can always use volunteers who are willing to take a document and translate it into another language.

Other Opportunities

Administrative Volunteer: Volunteers are needed to help with office organization, newsletter mailings and more. This can include working to support SCAN’s annual Northern Virginia Child Abuse Prevention Campaign through the preparation of mailings and other public education materials as well as providing support for important outreach events.

Special Event Volunteers: SCAN seeks Fundraising Volunteers to assist with the coordination of special events, solicitation of local businesses for donations of silent auction items, preparation and organization of materials related to fundraising, and/or planning around solicitations of local businesses. Actual volunteer tasks will vary according to the volunteer’s experience, contacts, and comfort level. Fundraising volunteers are provided with training, support, and materials. There are opportunities to assist in all stages of fundraising projects, including: coordinating an event, graphic design of promotional materials, assistance with mass mailings, follow up calls to local businesses, or meetings with local business leaders. Commitment can range from several hours a week for a limited number of weeks leading up to an event or a few hours a month long-term. For more information on fundraising volunteer opportunities at SCAN, call Sally Richards, Director of Development, at (703) 820-9001 or email srichards@scanva.org.

You may also be interested in organizing a fundraiser and making SCAN the beneficiary. You can work with a group of your coworkers, your Civic Club, a women’s group, a church group, a Scout troop, or any group that wants to work together to organize a fundraiser to help stop child abuse in Northern Virginia. Be creative! More information and a benefit proposal form are available.

Volunteer with your Group: Your community service, church, civic or just a group of your friends can volunteer together to help SCAN, either through a one-time activity or by planning a benefit for SCAN. Other one-time activities could include planting a pinwheel garden to raise awareness or a few people could help our childcare volunteers one evening at our support groups or parenting classes. You could also plan a benefit, like a concert or fashion show, and donate the proceeds to SCAN. If you want to plan a benefit, but aren’t sure what – how about organizing a Dining for Dollars event at a local restaurant? (We have a whole list of them who have offered!)

Research Aide: SCAN strives to keep on top of current information regarding child safety, child abuse and neglect, and resources available for education and prevention. SCAN seeks volunteers to research topics for fact sheets, workshops, and various SCAN activities.

Volunteer: Wish Granters

Work in teams of two with wish children and their families to help make wishes come true. This involves conducting an initial interview with the family to determine the child’s wish, working with Make-A-Wish® staff to help fulfill the wish and throwing a wish party for the child when the wish is granted. Make-A-Wish staff will handle the major details of the wish. We ask volunteers to be the direct point of contact with the family, and most importantly, to keep the child excited about the wish prior to its granting! This is a long term volunteer opportunity. Time commitment depends on the type of wish you are working on and how many at one time. The wish interview and granting almost always take place in the evening or on a weekend. You schedule this with the family and your wish partner. Flexibility in your evening and weekend schedule is fairly important. Wish-granting volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have reliable transportation. Also required are a signed Conflict of Interest/Ethics Agreement (annual), cleared background check and a one-day training session. Background checks must be updated every three years.

Fancy Cats has a critical need for Adoption Coordinators to host the adoption events at all of our Adoption Centers (Fair Lakes PetSmart, Springfield PetSmart, Dulles Landing PetSmart, Chantilly PetSmart, Bradlee PetValu, and Chico's Pet Depot in Great Falls. This is a key position for Fancy Cats and we really need your help. The Adoption Coordinator first screens adoption applications by reviewing the application and interviewing potential adopters. Volunteer: Cat and/or Kitten Foster Parent

It's Kitten Season and we need your help!

Fancy Cats is a foster-based rescue and we are always looking for volunteers who are able to take cats into their homes. The cats in foster homes benefit from the socialization they receive by interacting with their foster families. The foster program helps us learn more about an individual cat's habits and personality to better match each cat with their perfect forever home!

Foster homes are often needed for cats residing at one of Fancy Cats PetSmart locations. This gives the cats a break from their time in a cage. Fosters are also needed for new intakes, male and female, young and old, sick and healthy. During kitten season (March through October), our need for foster homes skyrockets.

Short-term foster homes are for cats that need a break from one of our PETsMART locations, or need to be in a home environment, such as kittens or shy cats. A short term foster home also assists our organization with emergency intake cases as needed. Short-term fosters usually last from two to eight weeks, but can sometimes run longer.

Long-term foster homes are for cats staying for two or more months. These cats often like to be only cats, may react very negatively to being in a cage, are older aged or may have a special medical need. Long term foster homes are for cats that are often adopted from a website inquiry because they may be too stressed at busy adoption events or because of a medical issue.

It is important to approach long-term fostering as if the foster cat may be in your home from one to three or more years. Cats with medical needs may be in your home for even longer.
