Volunteer: Monetary DonationsWhat We Do: The Ampersand Pantry Project was created to help our community during these very difficult times. Our drive-through location started serving meals on April 16, 2020. The first day, we gave out 25 meals in 180 minutes. More recently, we have given out 340 meals in only 75 minutes. To date, we have given out over 48,000 meals. Each meal contains 1 entree that is provided to us by local restaurants, 1 beverage, 1 piece of fruit, 1 bag of chips or a granola bar, and sometimes a dessert. We have not only made it a goal to support the people in our community, we have made it a goal to support our local restaurant owners. Each day different restaurants are providing the food, some donating and some working at cost, all to serve up to 350 meals a day. We also take about 130 of these meals to our pantries on Edwards Ferry Road and Harrison Street. By 11:30am, we have a line of families, who do not have access to cars, waiting for us to get there with the meals, non-perishable foods, and diapers. In addition, we give out diapers and baby wipes. In a single day, we give out more than 800 diapers (sizes 1-6) and many baby wipes to families in need. To date, we have given out over 200,000 diapers. We rely on diaper and baby wipe donations, as well as monetary donations, to continue to provide this important service. Every Saturday, we provide pet food to our recipients as well. In these difficult times, many people have had to surrender their pets to shelters because they cannot afford to take care of them. We have partnered with Gray Face Acres Senior Dog Shelter and Retreat to ensure that families can keep their pets fed. We always encourage and welcome pet food donations to keep this program running. Aside from providing people with basic needs, we realize that it is just as important to lift their spirits. Everyday, we give out a Carnation to every driver, walker and biker that comes to our drive-through. We attach different quotes in English and Spanish to each Carnation to make our recipients smile, as well as to remind them that we will get through these hard times together. One of the quotes this week was "We rise by lifting others" or "Nos levantamos al levantar a otros." By the end of every week, our recipients have gathered enough flowers to have a nice bouquet to come home to. On average, 1 day of operation costs $1,500.00. Please consider donating to The Ampersand Pantry Project so that we can keep this project alive to support the families, individuals, restaurant owners and pets that need our help now more than ever before.
Monetary Donation Instructions: Supporters may make donations payable to The Ampersand Pantry Project, a 501c3 charitable organization. The organization will acknowledge, in writing, all donations for the donor's tax purposes, if the donor's address is provided. Checks should be mailed to The Ampersand Pantry Project, 105 Loudoun St., SE, Leesburg, Virginia 20175. Checks can also be dropped off at our drive-through site, 338 East Market St. Leesburg, VA 20176, Monday - Sunday from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Volunteer: BATTLE BUDDY- VETERANSAre you a veteran or active duty service member? We are in need of those who have served or are currently serving in our Great Military. Military Volunteers are needed to become a "battle" to a veteran in hospice care. Our veterans proudly and courageously served and now it's our turn to serve them.
Battle Buddies are "friends" and call our veterans each week for a friendly visit. Veterans often will confide in another veteran before talking to a civilian. You speak the same language and "get it" This is a very meaningful way of supporting veterans. You will hear their stories which are remarkable. You will be their "battle"
We also perform veterans ceremonies which are an outstanding way of celebrating the service of our veterans. It is wonderful.
Due to COVID restrictions Battle Buddies are not seeing Veterans in person but they can visit via zoom, phone and do ceremonies via zoom.
Please contact Katherine Knoble, Veterans Service Coordinator at kknobel@capitalcaring.org for more information. Volunteer: Help Us Make a DifferenceFriends of Loudoun Mental Health (FLMH) has been active in Loudoun County for over 60 years, serving those with mental illness with financial housing assistance and through advocacy for increased and accessible services, and by increasing awareness of the need for good mental health and the acceptance of the people among us who constantly deal with a mental illness. We are involved in an effort to prevent suicide, especially among teens, and in supporting those who have lost loved ones to suicide. We are extremely active as we are both a governing and working board. We are seeking members who have an interest in working to provide financial assistance to Loudoun County residents experiencing disabling mental illnesses, who are willing to speak out as activists to help end discrimination, and who want to support and promote educational programs to make the community aware of mental health issues. If you are someone who wants to make a difference for people with serious mental illness, or you know someone, please reach out to me. This organization is on the verge of doing even more exciting things to provide a better life for the mentally ill and for doing our part to erase the stigma associated with mental illness so others may be willing to seek treatment and get their lives back on track. We are especially interested in new members who have an interest in legislative activities in all levels of government to keep the Board informed of proposed bills associated with services and delivery of those services for individuals and families dealing with mental illness. We also would welcome individuals who have an interest in working with our investments, fundraising, project management and outreach. More than mere talk, Friends of Loudoun Mental Health provides direct assistance to Loudoun County residents disabled by mental illness. We invite you to read more about the work we do and encourage you to partner with us on our mission to better the lives of our neighbors suffering with this debilitating disease at www.loudounfriends.org. Volunteer: Leap of Kindness - Pet Food DriveHold a Pet Food Drive for the Loudoun Pet Pantry. This year round program needs adult dog and cat food; small bags 3 to 8 lbs and canned food of any size. The food is distributed to Loudoun families in need. Pet food drives can be done anywhere (neighborhood, school, church, etc) by individuals or groups (friends/neighbors, sports groups, scout troops, etc). If you need help with ideas contact us at petpantry@humaneloudoun.org. Once you have collected the pet food, notify us and we will pick it up. All it takes for a family pet to be hungry or surrendered to a shelter/ rescue is for their family to have an unexpected medical bill or a job loss. This is an all too common story. Many families that were once financially secure now choose between buying food for their children or paying the rent and feeding the family pet. Your support enables us to be committed to assuring family pets are provided food and help the family keep their beloved furry family members. https://humaneloudoun.org/what-we-do/the-loudoun-pet-pantry-lpp/ Agency: Humane Society Of Loudoun County Hold a Pet Food Drive for the Loudoun Pet Pantry. You may also be interested in organizing a fundraiser and making SCAN the beneficiary. You can work with a group of your coworkers, your Civic Club, a women’s group, a church group, a Scout troop, or any group that wants to work together to organize a fundraiser to help stop child abuse in Northern Virginia. Be creative! More information and a benefit proposal form are available. Volunteer with your Group: Your community service, church, civic or just a group of your friends can volunteer together to help SCAN, either through a one-time activity or by planning a benefit for SCAN. Some one-time activities include helping SCAN with one of the family meals before parenting classes – anything from buying groceries to cooking and eating with the families. Other one-time activities could include planting a pinwheel garden to raise awareness or a few people could help our childcare volunteers one evening at our support groups or parenting classes. You could also plan a benefit, like a concert or fashion show, and donate the proceeds to SCAN. If you want to plan a benefit, but aren’t sure what – how about organizing a Dining for Dollars event at a local restaurant? (We have a whole list of them who have offered!) Research Aide: SCAN strives to keep on top of current information regarding child safety, child abuse and neglect, and resources available for education and prevention. SCAN seeks volunteers to research topics for fact sheets, workshops, and various SCAN activities. For more information on volunteer opportunities, email SCAN at info@scanva.org or call SCAN at (703) 820-9001.

Volunteer: Wish GrantersWork in teams of two with wish children and their families to help make wishes come true. This involves conducting an initial interview with the family to determine the child’s wish, working with Make-A-Wish® staff to help fulfill the wish and throwing a wish party for the child when the wish is granted. Make-A-Wish staff will handle the major details of the wish. We ask volunteers to be the direct point of contact with the family, and most importantly, to keep the child excited about the wish prior to its granting! This is a long term volunteer opportunity. Time commitment depends on the type of wish you are working on and how many at one time. The wish interview and granting almost always take place in the evening or on a weekend. You schedule this with the family and your wish partner. Flexibility in your evening and weekend schedule is fairly important. Wish-granting volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have reliable transportation. Also required are a signed Conflict of Interest/Ethics Agreement (annual), cleared background check and a one-day training session. Background checks must be updated every three years.
