Our team sorts donations into two categories: keep and toss. The ‘keep’ items are items we can distribute to those in need, and the ‘toss’ items are items we cannot distribute due to wear and tear or stains, we offer these as 'free play clothes' on Facebook. We strive to provide the best quality items to those who need them most.

Join The Piedmont Environmental Council and Friends of the Rappahannock for a volunteer tree planting on Tuesday, October 28th, at The Ecovillage of Loudoun County in Lovettsville, VA.  Volunteers are needed for two shifts, morning and afternoon.  Together, we will plant approximately 220 native trees and shrubs to enhance the "common land" stewarded by this rural community just a few miles from the Potomac River. 

Volunteer activities include tree planting, which involves scalping (removing grass with a hoe), digging holes, planting, and pounding wooden stakes. If you sign up for an afternoon shift, an additional activity might include quality control checks of the planted areas, watering newly planted trees, or similar tasks.   We also need 1 photographer for each shift to document our success.

The Girls on the Run 5K is a unique, end-of-season event that brings together thousands of NOVA girls, their families, and community members for a celebratory 5K run. To be a success each 5K event needs over 100 total volunteers in a variety of roles! Our 5K volunteers serve as greeters, buddy runners, cheer marshals, start and finish line managers, water stops managers, and much more. Volunteers are needed to fill positions at various times in the morning between 6:00am-9:30 am. We have a job for everyone who wants to help! Volunteer Tips:

Department Description- The ManCave is the ultimate "find anything" destination for the rummage sale.  While there are many departments that focus on specific categories or classifications, The Cave is the place where you find all things Electronic, Tools, Hardware, Televisions, Stereos and any/all garage and home garden needs. If you can imagine something crazy showing up and not having a traditional home- The ManCave is where you'll find it!! 

Our Team configuration- There are two chairman for the department, Steve Olmstead and Paul Cerula.  Both of us have many years under our belt organizing the chaos and excitement of the team we lead.  There are two functional portions of the sale that we have teams for as they relate to the setup portion of the event VS the sale days.  I will identify the days that teams will be on stage below and summarize what the roles and responsibilities are.

-Days 1-4 (Sunday through Wednesday) Setup space, unload donations/move to Cave, secondary sort/test, price. 

 During these days the biggest need is for sorting and moving- Lots of this will require some potentially heavier lifting however we follow all safety guidelines and have the moving company to assist with larger objects.  Generally smaller trailers will be used to move boxes and items to the ManCave area, volunteers will remove and sub-sort into the identified areas around the ManCave (We can review  areas further) and most of the electrical items will require testing and confirmation they are sellable.  We break up into testing teams for each section so we can use "subject matter experts" in all areas.  For example- If you are a tool person and buy lots  of tools and know what tools are used for, and can accurately price within sales guidelines (we have coaches) then you can sign up to work in tools.  Same would be applicable for Electronics, appliances, hardware, etc.  Generally speaking a working knowledge of Google or preferred search engines helps with a lot of this portion of the week.  

-Days 5 (Thursday) Sorting, Pricing and Volunteer shopping   

On Thursday we generally have the fair majority of the "heavy lifting" done and are at the point of organizing inventory, continued testing and pricing.  In years prior, we have run out of time and or rushed the pricing and as a result were unable to get the maximum amount that we could have for the items on tables- so there is a big focus on getting all items priced and ready by 11(ish) as that is when the Volunteer shopping window is open.  There are rules for who can shop based on hours worked that we have to track the same as other departments, and if volunteers do not meet the requirement OR do not want to shop, this is  where we shift into the sales and sales assistance portion of the week and shift on to Friday-Sunday

Days 6-8 (Friday through Sunday evening) VIP Sale, Normal sale days and tear down- I will do my best to break these into sections. 

-VIP Shopping- These days we really need to "shine" and ensure that we have all hands on deck for sales and the "sales associate" experience.  This primarily involves being on the floor, working with customers that might have questions about an item, a price, or simply need a hand carrying something to checkout.  This is a really easy job and typically requires a smile and pleasant attitude- also where our SME's can play an integral role in selling some of the items that may be higher dollar as many people have questions.   Note that on VIP day most of the buyers know what they are coming for and as mentioned- it’s the headcount that we need for assistance.  We also need a dedicated team for working at the sales table- this will involve checking customers out, calculating sales totals and ensuring things don’t get backed up.  This role requires someone with excellent communication skills as well as good old multi-tasking and teamwork! When VIP is done, teams are cut free for the day and leaders stick around to double check space for sale days

-General sale days (Saturday and Sunday)- Open to the public, a bit more chaos and really identical roles and responsibilities as VIP (just more people) The big need these days are just floor staff to rotate out and assist with customers.  This is kind of a dynamic couple of days and you could be asked to fill in just about anywhere that we are needing a hand.  

-Sunday afternoon- Cleanup.  This is pure and simple, manual labor and cleanup from the event.  Typically involves packing up remaining usable items for organizations to retrieve, Throwing out trash, Folding up tables, packing up sales and department supplies.

Volunteer Tips:

The job includes lifting heavy boxes, loading boxes and household goods into small trailers and truck beds, pushing full rolling bins on trolleys from sorting to the correct department, returning empty bins back to sorting. Sorting donation boxes and bags as they come off the truck, ie. books go to book department bin, blender goes to housewares bin, men’s winter coat goes to men’s department bin and dollhouse goes to children’s. 

It’s a lot of fun and an important job - we get everything off the trailers to the correct department. Sturdy shoes required no flip flops for this job!

During the Spring and Fall we receive many requests to share our shelter with Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups. We are looking for a volunteer who will help coordinate these efforts and meet the groups at the shelter for a quick educational session and a tour of the catteries. We currently have  a volunteer in place who will help with training and hand off of the program. On-site meet-ups with the groups can be shared with other volunteers if you are interested in building a small support team of volunteers who may be able to help.

Most Common Tasks –

The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital welcomes volunteers from the community to join us in support of the Riverside Gift Shop at Inova Loudoun Hospital, located at 44045 Riverside Parkway in Leesburg. Are you someone who enjoys interacting with the public? If so, we have an immediate need for volunteers to staff the front register. The shop carries everything from women’s wear, lotions, fragrances, home décor and seasonal items all artfully displayed. And of course, we sell floral arrangements, balloons and baby gifts for those visiting patients at the hospital. There are light bagging duties associated with work at the front register and requisite flu and other vaccinations associated with volunteering in a hospital.

We are a new nonprofit day support that assists adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We harbor important life and social skills. Peer motivation is the best encouragement. Come make a friend and help is incorporate community into their days. 

We need volunteers to work alongside our group of 6-8 Special needs adults. Need 3-4 volunteers per day. Assisting with completing activities, doing art work, and offering friendship!

Our Seasonal Basics event is October 4th, and we are preparing to provide children in foster care, and children whose family is experiencing financial insecurities with the essentials they need for the season ahead. Currently we have 135 kids registered, but we expect about 100 more. Right now, we are seeking donations of clothing sizes 0–Large to make sure every child has something warm, comfortable, and new-to-them.

Do you LOVE to garden but have little space to do so?  Would you like to make an impact in your local community and share your passion with others? Then this opportunity may be for you. Second Star Farm and Wildlife Habitat is seeking an experienced gardener (or team of gardeners) to help lead and maintain an organic vegetable and herb garden during the 2026 growing season.  Our farm would provide a stipend for site prep and seeds, and would help the lead gardener (that's you!) turn a small plot of the property into a community garden. While the lead gardener/s would be the primary individual/s responsible for maintenance of this garden, volunteers are available on a pre-arranged basis to help with garden care and harvest. The head gardener (or gardeners if you have a friend/associate/partner interested in sharing this project) would receive up to 50% of the produce while the remaining harvest would be donated to the Dulles South Food Pantry and other community members in need.   

We are also seeking individuals who can support youth-oriented workshops on gardening, pollination, and the impacts of agriculture (both good and bad) on local ecosystems. Minimal time commitments are needed for these workshops, which are organized on an ad hoc basis, typically lasting only 1-2 hours over a pre-scheduled weekend.

Tuesday’s Children is actively recruiting volunteer adult mentors for our youth mentoring program, established exclusively for children and siblings of fallen military service members. This custom-designed program fills the gaps in services offered to families of the fallen with children 6-18 years old. Mentors can offer advice, share life experiences, help a young person navigate challenges, and have fun! So many mentors share that their mentoring relationship changed their life for the better, just as much as they changed the life of a child.

Volunteers are recruited, screened, trained, and managed/supervised by professional staff to safeguard that every adult is committed and qualified to play an active role in the healing of a child. Matches between a mentor and a child are made based on common interests, personality traits and similar schedules and intended to last a year or longer.

Our volunteers are very important to our athletes and we need some good volunteers very soon with our upcoming fall sports.

Join us in getting your hands dirty for a good cause! The Piedmont Environmental Council’s Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows needs volunteers to help grow and harvest fresh produce for Clarke and Loudoun food pantries in our 2025 season. While you help your community you’ll learn more about the local food system and maybe even pick up a few tips on growing your own fruits and veggies.

Volunteer opportunities for 2025 will begin in late March/early April and continue throughout the growing season. We have multiple opportunities per week during the peak season (June-September) and offer one Saturday per month. Due to the food pantry’s availability to pick up produce, the majority of time slots are during the week. Volunteer opportunities are announced via email to all volunteers who have signed up.

Volunteering is great for team-building! We are happy to coordinate School Field Trips, Corporate, and Group (e.g. scouts,clubs,faith-based organizations) volunteer days for groups of fifteen or more.

All ages are welcome to volunteer, minors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Classes are located at libraries and community centers. Classes are held one time a week and run for 12 weeks.  We have fall, winter, and summer sessions.

StageCoach Theatre holds several performances in its black box theater in Ashburn each month. Its non-profit arm, StageCoach Playhouse for the Arts, manages the front of house - selling concessions and checking in guests. 

All volunteers will help as needed after a performance, including cleaning up after the show is over. Specific duties may include ushering guests to their seats, gathering seating plaques after the show, and general clean-up. All volunteers MAY be able to see the show for free if a performance has not sold out and seats are still available - no guarantee.

Our volunteers work one-on-one with unaccompanied migrant children to connect with them and advocate for their rights. We have some basic requirements to volunteering with us:

We will be hosting an in-person training on Saturday and Sunday, September 13th and 14th in Washington, DC. This will be our last training of 2025; however, if you are not able to attend the training, please still apply as we will have multiple trainings every year in both virtual and in-person formats.

Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers works with the elderly and disabled throughout Loudoun County.  

At Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers, we provide medical rides to some of the counties medically fragile residents. Several of our Care Receivers need rides to dialysis, chemo and radiation appointments.  We also have some Care Receivers who must go for medical appointments, such as physical therapy, in order to prepare for a life-saving surgery such as mass removal or an organ transplant. Still others may need to continue ongoing care in order to preserve eyesight and similar appointments that will allow them to keep their independence longer. We are anxiously looking for compassionate volunteers to provide these rides to our Care Receivers.

Volunteers also provide respite relief for caregivers allowing them much needed time to rest, take a break, or run errands. We also provide companionship through Pet Therapy. The impact of a Girls on the Run volunteer coach is as boundless as it is beautiful. Coaches work to support the Girls on the Run vision of a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. So lace up your sneakers and inspire a group of participants to be strong, confident, and healthy! Girls on the Run is a youth development program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade that creatively integrates running and physical movement. Teams of volunteer coaches are trained to facilitate our easy-to-follow curriculum with small groups of participants twice a week over the course of a eight week season. You don't need to be a runner or a competitive athlete to coach! Successful coaches only need to serve as role models for girls by showing up prepared and on time, by listening attentively, and by demonstrating a positive attitude! GOTR NOVA encourages applications from minorities, people with disabilities, individuals who are bilingual and all other qualified applicants.

Coaches are required to commit to 2-3 hours per week for the season, with a few additional hours required for Coach Training and the GOTR NOVA season ending 5K celebration. Practice schedules will vary based on team. GOTR’s Fall 2025 Season starts the week of September 22, 2025 and ends on November 24, 2025.

PEC’s Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows connects residents to Loudoun’s vital agricultural history while providing locally-grown fruits and vegetables for its food-insecure population today.

Since its inaugural season in 2019, the Community Farm has donated 100% of its produce to area food pantries, totaling over 180,000 pounds.

Corporate volunteering at the Community Farm is an excellent way for your team to strengthen internal partnerships while making a meaningful impact on the community.

Volunteers will work in groups, bonding with their coworkers over shared tasks on our beautiful farm. Our farm staff guides volunteers through the day’s tasks which often include planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables and caring for our orchard, berry patch and native plant gardens. 

We believe that taking team-building outside of the office and into nature creates opportunities for fresh perspectives and inspires individuals to make positive changes in their communities.

We hope our volunteers leave the farm feeling more connected to their environment, each other, and inspired to tell their friends and family about the impact they made at the Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows!

Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers is a volunteer based organization that provides free services to some of the most vulnerable people in the county. Most of our Care Receivers are shut-ins. If they aren't shut-ins, it is seldom that they get to socialize or go out, save a doctor's appointment or a rare, special event. 

One of the services we provide to our Care Receivers is food delivery. Several of our Care Receivers are both lonely and hungry. Most live all alone and a few of them are families. Some of the families have young children who are being raised by a grandparent or grandparents. Each time you deliver food to one of our Care Receivers, you are providing nutritious food to them, but, you are also providing them with much needed companionship and hope. If not for your deliveries of food, our Care Receivers wouldn't be able to eat proper meals, if at all. All of these gifts you are giving are huge for our Care Receivers, and for us, too! With your help, we keep our Care Receivers going and because of you, we can continue to fulfill our mission. 

We are affiliated with Dulles South Food Pantry and Loudoun Hunger Relief. This means you can serve both the East and West side of Loudoun County and choose which pantry would be more convenient for you to deliver from. Flexibility is just one of the benefits we offer our volunteers

Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers works with the elderly and disabled of Loudoun County. These are two groups who have been categorized as vulnerable by the CDC, WHO and other organizations. Due to the current restrictions our Care Receivers are facing, most have been ordered to stay home and wait until it has been deemed safe to go out again. This means many of our senior Care Receivers and Disabled Care Receivers with compromised immune systems cannot leave their homes to shop for necessities like food, prescriptions, toiletries and more.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO REQUIRE A BACKGROUND CHECK FOR ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS. This will be done at no cost to you and we will be happy to provide you a copy of the report for your records.

We provide services to elderly and disabled Loudoun County residents who may be unable to drive and are restricted to their homes due to age or health.  

We are looking for volunteers to visit clients once a week for 45 minutes to an hour and cheer them up.  You might play chess, cards, or take a walk with a client.  Or you might just sit and talk with the client.  

Volunteers who are social, friendly, outgoing, and who like interacting on a personal level, this is for you.  Appointments are usually during the day and during the week.  You pick up appointments on our friendly web based system.

There is no minimum weekly requirement of number of hours required.

We have been providing extra items for our low income elderly and disabled Care Receivers, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, coffee, prescriptions, cleaning supplies, etc. We have been able to do this for the last couple of months using the supply of gift cards we had in our office. In the last few weeks, the need for these items has steadily increased and we would like to continue to do be able to provide these extra necessities for our Care Receivers.

Gum Spring Library needs volunteer tutors to help teach English to adult members of our community.

The volunteer will be responsible for encouraging conversation and providing lessons for each meeting with their student. Teachers and students are expected to meet once a week over an eight week period.

A background in English as a Second Language education is helpful, but not required. Speaking an additional language besides English is likewise not required. Teaching materials and resources will be provided.

We are looking for a volunteer to assist in the View of Heaven Farm bakery.  You would work with special needs adults helping them learn how to prep, prepare and bake recipes.  Worker must follow specific rules and you would be helping them to follow those rules.  In addition, workers are learning what it means to have a job and to work with others.

Share your skills as an educator to inspire awe and wonder for Bald Eagles and other wildlife by presenting classroom chat sessions to students.  These sessions are reserved by teachers in advance and take place online weekday mornings and early afternoons from February to June.  Complete an Eagle Cam Volunteer Application and include your experience as an educator to be considered for this program.  We provide the eagle knowledge while you provide the skills to engage students!  Read more about classroom chats here.

About Our Volunteers

Inova Loudoun hospital volunteers are adults and teenagers from the Northern Virginia and Loudoun County area. Each year our volunteers give thousands of hours of their time to our hospital, team members, patients and visitors. Volunteer Opportunities are available for those 16 years of age and older. Our volunteers support departments at our Lansdowne, Ashburn and Leesburg campuses. Volunteers assist team members, patients, visitors and families.  Link for more information

Responsibilities:
• Safely carry boxes weighing up to 50 lbs up and down stairs
• Sort and distribute perishable and non-perishable foods
• Perform cleaning and vacuuming tasks to maintain a tidy environment
• Utilize basic computer skills for administrative tasks
• Assist with various duties to support the efficient operation of the food pantry
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills when interacting with fellow volunteers and
community members
• Provide excellent customer service to individuals accessing the food pantry
• Display effective time management skills for task completion

Requirements:
• Minimum age of 16 years
• Good physical health to handle lifting and moving tasks
• Preferred high school level education or above
• Basic computer skills are advantageous
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
• Effective time management skills for task completion
• Fluency communicating in english and spanish is a plus

The winter season is upon us and we want to make sure we are prepared. There are times when it snows and we simply do not have the staff to shovel all of our driveways, lay salt, etc. We are looking to assemble an on-call team for this winter, one we can reach out to in the event that one of our homes needs help shoveling snow or taking the necessary precautions to keep our individuals safe. If you would like to be added to our list of Snow Patrol volunteers this season, please email Volunteer Coordinator, Shannon White, at volunteer@mycri.org. We are in need of volunteers all across Northern Virginia and Richmond.

We need volunteers throughout the year but in particular during the Waterford Fair, the first full weekend of October.

The Old Mill Shop - set up, intake of craft/art items, retail, cashiers, post event inventory, artisan pick up.

Fine Art Competition & Art Mart Sales - art intake, hang show, sales, solicit prize donations (phone work), break down show

Beer & Wine at the Old School - ticket sales, pour beer, work with winery staff to pour samples

Re-enactors & performers - great for drama groups/clubs/dancers/singers

Dried Flower Barn - set up, sales, break down

Area chairpersons - during the fair be the main contact person for the artisans in your designated area

Ticket takers

Set safety fencing - join the crew that helps get the grounds ready the week before the Fair

Home Tour docents - greet visitors & share property history from prepared script

Artisan Booth sitters - give the artisans a chance to grab lunch, use the restrooms, etc.

Loudoun County Public Library needs volunteers to help adult English learners in our community with our weekly Online English Practice on Mondays at 2 p.m.

The volunteer will be responsible for assisting the primary Facilitator with encouraging English conversation and leading students through language exercises. The exercises will be provided.

Orientation, teaching materials and resources will be provided through Loudoun County Public Library, but volunteers are encouraged to be creative!

A background in language education is helpful, but not required. Likewise, speaking a language other than English is not required.

Do you enjoy spending time with great people? Do you love horses?

Bridle Paths is looking for volunteers to help before, during, and after adaptive riding lessons to ensure client safety and help keep sessions on time and track.

Experience working with horses is not required. We train each volunteer to work with horses and riders in a therapeutic context. Younger volunteers partner with older, more experienced volunteers to help with horse and barn care and preparing horses for lessons.

Duties include: 

Volunteers must complete an application and participate in a barn visit before signing up to be added to the schedule. Interested volunteers will learn about the duties involved and determine fit for the tasks we need help with during their barn visit.

Class Instructors engage with senior center members at one of five Loudoun County centers: Ashburn Senior Center, Carver Center in Purcellville, Senior Center at Cascades, Dulles South Senior Center, and Senior Center of Leesburg. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm and Saturdays 8:00am - 12:00pm. Activities include crafts, bingo, bridge, line dance, field trips, fitness, clubs, health screening and information, games, and special events.

Ways Volunteers make a difference as Café Servers

1. Serve meals to Senior Center members & guests Monday through Friday, noon to 12:30 p.m. 

2. Assist with set-up, serving and clean up with volunteer shifts typically running from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

3. Provide meals at the following Loudoun County nutritional sites: Senior Center of Leesburg, Ashburn Senior Center, Dulles South Senior Center, Senior Center at Cascades, Carver Center in Purcellville, Madison House in Leesburg, and William Watters House in Sterling.

4. Be a part of the AAA Nutritional Meal Program that provides county residents with nutritional programs that are social and recreational in nature.

5. Be a part the team that serves one hot meal is served Monday through Friday, with the exception of county holidays and other closings. Each meal meets the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) guideline, set by federal law, and the Nutritional Meal Program complies with state and local laws regarding safety and food handling.

What you need to volunteer as a Café Server:

Volunteers must complete all training sessions prior to assuming responsibilities. Food service volunteers also must be able to stand for extended periods of time and may be required to lift up to 10 pounds.

They must be at least 18 years old to serve food.

The Linear Parks and Trails team is leading Second Saturdays, an ongoing volunteer opportunity to learn about trail building and maintenance and make a difference in the community!

We will use hand tools like loppers, clippers, handsaws, hedge trimmers, and shovels to clean and maintain trail segments, remove invasive species, install signage and a variety of other projects.

Each month will vary depending on program needs. You can expect to walk at least a mile, see wildlife, get sweaty and strong, learn, and hang out with fun people,

The Linear Parks and Trails System Plan to create interconnected natural resource corridors. Corridors provide habitat to native species and multi-use trails for recreation and transit. We conserve natural resources, preserve history, and connect communities.

The Home Delivered Meals Program is looking for volunteers to deliver a weekday noontime hot nutritious meal and a friendly smile to seniors confined to their homes.
