We have 400 acres of land and many buildings to maintain. You do not have to know all the following skills to volunteer. Volunteer: Mansion DocentDocents provide visitors with a clear, accurate and interactive tour about the full history of Oatlands, including the Carter and Eustis families, slavery, and specific people who were once enslaved by the Carters. Docents must possess excellent speaking skills; be comfortable interacting with the public; have a basic knowledge of Virginia and Loudoun County history; and have a desire to learn an extensive amount of history about the Carters and slavery. Training is provided. Docents must be able to work weekends, some holidays, and an occasional evening for special events. Tasks might include: weeding, mulching, pruning, digging, watering, leaf clean-up, stick clean-up, planting, taking care of potted plants, maintaining trails, etc. Volunteers may be asked by visitors, basic questions about the site or the garden while volunteering; a training manual with helpful information will be provided. We are looking for volunteers who are able to dedicate at least 8 hours a month to help us preserve the gardens at Oatlands.
