Volunteer: Marketing Specialist

Reports To: Executive Director

Status: Part-Time (Flexible based on candidate)

Location: Hybrid – Remote with some in-person event attendance (Loudoun County, VA area)

Position Summary

The Marketing Specialist will develop and execute a dynamic, mission-driven marketing and communications strategy to build awareness, inspire engagement, and increase support for Upside Down Moments. This role requires a passionate storyteller with strong digital, creative, and organizational skills who can elevate the organization’s presence across platforms and audiences.

Key ResponsibilitiesA. Brand Messaging & Storytelling

Develop a compelling brand narrative that reflects our mission of transforming lives from “upside down” to “upside right.”

Regularly collect and share impactful beneficiary stories through photos, videos, and testimonials.

Create and maintain a tailored Case for Support for donors, corporate partners, and foundations.

Promote transparency by coordinating and publishing annual impact reports and financial summaries.

B. Digital Marketing & Online Presence

Website Optimization

Ensure the website is clear, visually compelling, mobile-friendly, and mission-focused.

Highlight success stories, clear calls to action, and easy pathways to donate or get involved.

Maintain updated program information in a “How We Help” section.

C. Public Relations & Media Engagement

Build and maintain relationships with local media outlets, including newspapers, radio, and community magazines.

Write and distribute press releases for major events and announcements.

Draft and submit op-eds and letters to the editor on relevant issues (e.g., foster care, youth support).

Develop and update a media kit that includes key facts, statistics, photos, and stories.


Qualifications

2+ years of experience in marketing, preferably in a nonprofit setting.

Strong writing and storytelling skills with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.

Familiarity with SEO, Google Ads, and Google Ad Grants is a plus.

Experience creating and implementing content calendars.

Comfortable using design tools like Canva for flyers, graphics, and social media visuals.

Passion for youth empowerment, community building, and mission-driven work.

The Communications & Outreach Coordinator will support our mission by maintaining our online presence, creating outreach materials, and helping us engage supporters through email and social media.

Key Responsibilities

Social Media Management

Develop and schedule engaging content across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other platforms.

Monitor engagement and respond to messages/comments promptly.

Track analytics to inform future strategies.

Email Campaigns & Newsletters

Design and send monthly email newsletters using Wix.

Create targeted email campaigns for events, donation drives, or announcements.

Design & Print Materials

Create flyers, postcards, and other promotional materials as needed.

Collaborate with staff to ensure materials align with event goals and branding.

Participation & Collaboration

Attend one UpsideDown Moments event annually to capture content and engage with the community.

Participate in monthly virtual or in-person team meetings to stay aligned with organizational goals.

Qualifications

Experience in communications, marketing, graphic design, or related field (professional or volunteer).

Proficiency in Canva, and social media platforms.

Strong writing and editing skills.

Organized, proactive, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Passion for serving youth in foster care and aged-out populations.

    •    Coordinate with donors to schedule pickups
    •    Safely load and transport items to our headquarters in Hamilton
    •    Represent UpsideDown Moments with professionalism and kindness

This role is perfect for individuals with a vehicle capable of transporting larger items who are passionate about making a tangible difference in the community. Join us in helping provide essential resources to those in need!

Volunteer: Donation Declutter Days

UDM receives many donations, and we are backed up at the moment.  We need assistance in going through the donations, and determining what can be kept (according to our criteria).  After sorting, then the donations will be organized by size, gender, and season.

The events will be on the third Saturday of each month.
