Who We Are

Mission: To provide employment and a welcoming community to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

A Farm Less Ordinary (AFLO) is a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to provide employment and a welcoming community to adults with moderate to severe intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD). We help encourage a sense of self-worth, and independence for our “Growers” through employment opportunities. It is our firm conviction that people should be recognized for their contributions, not defined by their disabilities.

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ

Are you new to volunteering with us? Or did you volunteer with us before 2022? If yes to either:

  1. You need to register as a new volunteer!
  2. Please visit our website to start this process
  3. Read all the information on our volunteer page before signing up

Please wait to sign up for volunteer activities on Loudoun Cares until we confirm you’ve finished the registration process.

About Background Checks: We want to keep everyone safe – our volunteers, staff, and community. That’s why we do background checks on all volunteers. Here’s what you should know:

  • A third party provides these background checks for free
  • These checks follow the Fair Credit Reporting Act rules

What We Do

A Farm Less Ordinary provides employment and a welcoming community to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities, while sustainably growing organic food for the metropolitan DC area.

We send our Growers home with skills and strategies in:

  • Core Job Skills: Reliable attendance, respectful communication, goal setting, task completion, working as a team member
  • Agriculture: Participation in vegetable lifecycle & farm maintenance tasks
  • Customer Service: appropriate conversation with customers, money handling, retail display
  • Food Handling: Hygiene, knife skills, kitchen safety, recipe-following

Our program also benefits caregivers. The time Growers spend working at AFLO provides them some relief—both financially, and in the knowledge that they have a few hours where their dependent is engaged in a safe space and a structured environment.
